Grade 5
5th Grade – Joy in Leadership
Welcome to 5th Grade at PACT! As the leaders of the Elementary Campus, 5th graders embody the joy of responsibility, teamwork, and preparation for the next chapter of learning.

Joyful Moments
Our days are filled with meaningful experiences that make learning both challenging and fun. Students celebrate “aha!” moments during math discussions, dive into rich stories during reading groups, and explore the world through hands-on science investigations. Special traditions—like the Wax Museum, gratitude essays, and our Base Camp field trip—create memorable experiences that help students connect learning to the world around them. Spirit Weeks bring extra energy and community pride, filling the halls with creativity and excitement. These joyful moments help students feel connected, capable, and enthusiastic about school.

Learning Milestones
By the end of the year, students make significant academic and personal progress. In math, they strengthen problem-solving strategies and deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals, and multi-step operations. In reading, they grow as critical thinkers who can analyze complex texts and communicate their ideas clearly. Through the FOSS science curriculum, students gain hands-on experience with scientific inquiry, experimentation, and data analysis. Just as importantly, they build essential character traits—such as perseverance, empathy, and responsibility—that prepare them for a smooth transition to middle school.

What to Expect
In fifth grade, students step into a learning environment that is active, supportive, and engaging. We follow the Minnesota State Standards while using Math Expressions, HMH, and FOSS to guide our instruction. Each day includes dedicated time for ELA, math, and science or social studies, ensuring a well-rounded and consistent academic experience. Students also participate in a daily special—such as media, physical education, music, or art—which enriches their learning and helps them explore new interests. Our classrooms are hands-on and collaborative—places where students are encouraged to think deeply, share their ideas, and take ownership of their learning. Throughout the year, we also focus on character development, helping students grow into responsible, respectful, and confident leaders as they prepare for middle school and beyond.

Joy at Home: Tips for Families
Families play a powerful role in supporting fifth graders. Encourage your child to talk about what they’re learning each day—it helps them process new ideas and build confidence. Setting aside consistent time for reading, practicing math facts, and staying organized can make a big difference. Celebrate effort as much as achievement, and remind your child that character matters just as much as academics. Most importantly, partner with us: reach out with questions, stay engaged, and celebrate the growth you see throughout the year. We are all on the same team!
